Introducing the peated version of Waterford Irish Whiskey!

The first peated Irish whiskies, for generations, were bottled by the Waterford Distillery on Grattan Quay. Until its reintroduction by Waterford, Irish peat had not been used in whiskey production since the early 20th century, so all knowledge of the use of Irish peat had disappeared from the collective memory.
Waterford owner and founder Mark Reynier, who resurrected the Bruichladdich distillery on Islay, is no stranger to the peated whisky production method and created the now very famous Port Charlotte and Octomore peated Scotch whiskies.

In its pioneering quest to discover the most natural flavors in whisky, Waterford dried barley grown on the Ballybannon farm in Carlow, using peat from Ballyteige in County Kildare. The crop from each farm was peated to 47 ppm (phenols expressed in parts per million).
Although the peat levels are similar to those of famous Islay whiskies such as Port Charlotte and Ardbeg and higher than Bowmore or Lagavulin, the extraordinary result is distinctly different, with the intensity of Irish barley shining through the encompassing envelope of refined peatiness.

This Waterford Peated Ballybannon offers curious tasters and peat fanatics (affectionately known as Peat Freaks) a whole new experience of comparison and contrast. Or perhaps it's just an old memory from a bygone era, reawakened?
And as for whether the terroir outweighs the peat... It's up to you to find out!
