Birichino (pronounced birikino) is a very interesting project.
Founded in Santa Cruz in 2008, and drawing on 35 combined years of wine production and sales in California, France and Italy, owners and winemakers Alex Krause and John Locke focus on the perfect balance between fragrance, balance and thrill with a particular taste for varieties that provide enormous pleasure and reestablish a direct connection with the sensual world.
John worked from 1990 to 2007 with the legendary Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon Vineyard, with (the equally legendary) André Ostertag of Domaine Ostertag in Alsace in 1993, and with a host of small producers across Italy and the south. West of France. Alex started in 1992 with Randall, worked with John in the winery, then escaped to the sales side in the late 90s to eventually serve today as the Export Sales Manager for Bonny Doon. Vineyard.
Birichino obtains its grapes from wine growers who work with care and historically established in areas of maritime influence, with a moderate climate. Locke and Krause buy grapes from renowned vineyards planted in the right places, such as Grenache from ungrafted 100-year-old vines. The estate operates ten vineyards: Antle, Bechthold, Besson, Duarte, Jurassic Park, Lilo, San Bernarde, Spur Ranch, St Georges Pinot and St Georges Zinfandel.
The objective of this approach is to maintain the quality and vigor of the raw material. Thus, the preference goes to methods with little intervention, often by favoring the use of indigenous yeasts, stainless steel vats or neutral barrels, by reducing the number of rackings and finings, and by avoiding filtration when possible.
