The Isle of Arran distillery started very early with cask finishes.
In recent years, the permanent range has been built around the Amarone Cask Finish, Port Cask Finish, Sherry Cask Finish and Sauternes Cask Finish expressions, which are now presented in the sleek, premium and ultra-modern bottles that characterise Arran, more dynamic than ever.
This single malt has been matured in Amarone casks donated by an artisanal producer of this renowned Italian red wine (Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG).
The Master Blender, James MacTaggart, carefully monitored this second maturation to ensure the balance between the contribution of the amarone casks and the sweet, fruity character that is typical of Arran.
Bottled at 50% to maximise the concentration of aroma and flavour, unchill-filtered and without colouring, this rich, fruity single malt is highly original, with its luscious cherry, cranberry and dark chocolate notes.
Nose: fine, firm. Extremely elegant, the first nose is intensely fruity (wild strawberry, blueberry). It evolves on apple jelly and heady flowers (lavender, lilac). As it progresses, it gains in depth (liquorice, chocolate, zan) then spices make their appearance (pepper, clove).
Palate: delicate, nuanced. Just as airy as the nose, it looks towards the East (rose petal, loukoum). Dried fruits (apricot, date, fig) give it thickness. It continues with black fruits (gooseberry, blackcurrant), eucalyptus and Armenian paper.
Finish: balanced, full of dynamism. It returns to its Scottish origins (malted barley, yeast, beer). Mineral (pencil lead), it continues in a tasty way on gingerbread, coriander and cardamom.
The empty glass highlights the quality of its woodiness (vanilla).
