Domenico Clerico is considered a beacon in the landscape of the prestigious Barolo.
His azienda embodies the modern style that stands out for its clarity and precision.
"Today it's much easier for us than it was for our father: the technique allows us to achieve maximum results with minimal effort. Even on plots where it was once difficult to harvest healthy, mature clusters, we are now getting good results. However, the tradition must remain alive. We are learning to combine the old with the new," Clerico said.
In 1976, Dopmenico Clerico began working in his father's farm. He produced grapes on a few hectares for the Social Cantina Terre del Barolo. This was followed by initial attempts at winemaking and, as early as 1977, Domenico Clerico bought a small plot in the Bussia area, which allowed him to cash in 1979 his first Barolo, the Briccotto Bussia. It sold all its production in the United States, even today its main market: four-fifths of the 110,000 bottles of its annual production are drunk there, half for its powerful Barolos.
In 1981, Domenico Clerico was able to acquire other vines in the "Ginestra" climate near Monforte. That sounded the birth of the vintage Ciabot Mentin. Later, also followed in the "Ginestra" of the vines in the vintage Pajana. In 1995, he bought vines in the climate "Mosconi" still in the commune of Monforte d'Alba, whose grapes he vinifies in Barolo Percristina. The vineyards of Ginestra and Bricco Mosconi - two climates of Monforte d'Alba - are known to produce fine, structured and long-lasting wines. In 2005, Domenico Clerico was able to rent other vines in the commune of Serralunga, where grapes grow for the Barolo Aeroplanservaj.
With Arte, a creation of 90% nebbiolo and 10% Domenico Clerico has managed an assembly that is among the most appreciated in its category.
Domenico Clerico died in the summer of 2017 from an insidious illness. His long-time collaborator and right-hand man in the company, the young and friendly Oscar Arrivabene, runs the azienda in a manner entirely in keeping with the spirit of Domenico, with Giuliana Clerico and a well-established team, at least until a nephew is ready to follow in the immense footsteps of the uncle.
