António Madeira
Vinhas Velhas 2018
Dão DOC
Portugal - Dão
António Madeira is a French winemaker of Portuguese origin. In 2010, he decided to return to the land of his ancestors, the Serra da Estrela.
This sub-region of the Dão was once known as one of the most beautiful terroirs for vine growing. It produced what was called the "Great Growths of the Dão Highlands".
It is at the foot of these mountains, the highest in Portugal, that António has isolated plots of old planted vines that are distinguished by the typicity of the grape varieties, the quality of the granite soil and the ideal exposure.
The philosophy of the estate is simple: respect for the soil, the plant and the fruit in order to focus on the essential: the expression of the terroir of the Serra de Estrella. To achieve this, António Madeira does not use any pesticides and works the soil with horses. This ideology obviously continues in the winery with the use of indigenous yeasts and open tank fermentations. The wine, which is more infused than extracted, continues to be aged in neutral barrels for 18 months.
Grape varieties:
Jaen, baga, tinta amarela and 20 other complementary varieties.
Ageing: 18 months in neutral French oak barrels (400, 500 and 225 l), then 3 months in stainless steel tanks. Unfined and unfiltered wine. Low dose of SO2 at bottling (29 mg/l total SO2).
Tasting notes:
A beautiful colour with black fruits and spices, a touch of cocoa. This "vieilles vignes" cuvée brings a virile touch in its definition with a macerated burlat cherry side. The palate is ample and fleshy with a nice sap of tannin. It is a concentrated wine with a beautiful energy in the mouth. A tonic acidity gives the wine dynamism.
The persistence and dimension of this wine make it a great wine to keep.
Wine style :
Elegant and fruity red wine.
Food and wine pairing :
Beef fillet Wellington style. Roast veal with prunes, sweet potato mousseline with cumin.
Cellar ageing potential:
10 years.
