Charles Melton

The Father in Law - Syrah 2017

Barossa

Australie - Australie méridionale

Originally from Sydney, but become an icon of the Barossa Valley, Charlie Melton released his first wine in 1984. He was the first to defend the value of the old Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre vineyards in the Barossa Valley. He succeeds in convincing local winegrowers to keep their plants, instead of pulling them up to use more classic grape varieties. He was therefore one of the few winemakers who helped maintain the region's cultural heritage. The estate now covers 80 hectares, on which attention is paid to the quality of the fruit, preserving very low yields (35 hl per hectare), with vines dating back over 80 years. There are 3 vineyards: Krondorf, the main vineyard of the estate, with Grenache and Syrah vines planted in 1947; Woodlands with Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet; and finally Eden Valley, (bought in 2008 and planted in 2009), comprising Syrah and Grenache.

Grape varieties:

100% syrah (Shiraz)

Tasting Notes:

The color of this wine is intense, almost opaque. The nose reveals itself with notes of spices, black fruit and liquorice. We feel the full maturity in this wine. The oak is nuanced, it sweetens a little but it remains well managed. The mouth is full-bodied and robust with a generous and velvety substance without any tannic harshness. The texture is pulpy and the wine is tasty.
A very typical Syrah from this Australian region of the Barossa Valley.

Wine style:

Powerful and complex red wine.

Smoked T-bone with vine shoots and cramberries chutney. Larded quail, seasonal mushrooms, mashed potatoes.
