Château d'Yquem
2019
Sauternes AOC
1er cru supérieur classé de Sauternes
France - Bordelais
Known as the world's most famous sweet wine, Yquem has been owned since 1999 by the LVMH group headed by businessman Bernard Arnault. The château is now run by Pierre Lurton, who is also the head of Château Cheval Blanc in Saint-Émilion. Before him, Alexandre de Lur Saluces wrote, from 1967 to 2004, some of the most beautiful pages of the history of the only first growth classified superior in 1855, in the line of his ancestors.
For this wine is perhaps the most consistent in Bordeaux for a hundred years. Even in small vintages and difficult periods, Yquem has held its own even in its incomparable ageing. It owes this to a unique terroir, which reacts to the development of botrytis like no other, and to the men who have known how to understand and enhance its qualities.
The 2019 vintage at Yquem:
A hot and dry year, including in September. Grapes that benefited from a beautiful concentration, especially on the clay slopes. The winegrowers waited for the botrytis. The morning mists did not live up to expectations but the winegrowers point out that they have already harvested even later. The first beneficial rains came at the beginning of October, accompanied by ideal weather for the concentration of botrytis on the Sauvignon. The first picking and cleaning of the Sauvignons took place on October 7th: the first harvests were quite fruity and fresh, an asset for the blending. The botrytis arrived progressively, in conditions that slightly impaired the concentration of Château d'Yquem. The winegrowers waited until October 11th to find a window of opportunity to harvest until mid-afternoon before the heavy rains.
Result: superb Semillon and Sauvignon grapes of a very high quality!

Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon
Tasting notes:
"With its pretty golden colour, this vintage is characterised by floral notes, slightly zesty (verbena) giving it an airy quality. It is strikingly fresh, punctuated by notes of apricot and peach. The mouth is ample and voluptuous. A very fine expression of a perfectly controlled botrytis which has sublimated the Sauvignon, representing an exceptional 45% of the blend. The 2019 vintage has everything to seduce from its youngest age and will travel magnificently in time!"
Pierre Lurton, Chairman and CEO of Château d'Yquem
