Terroir renowned for its diversity, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre are the main grape varieties of red wines
de Pézenas alongside Cinsault and Carignan. They give these wines an elegant and velvety mark. Rich on the attack, they show balance and roundness with present, silky and persistent tannins.
The terroir of Pézenas (34) in the Languedoc is a mosaic of soils made up of Villafranchian gravel, schist, limestone and sandstone, linked together by a basalt flow. This volcanic rock is the geological peculiarity of this territory.
It is a triangle of about 24km on each side, point facing downwards, it is bordered to the east by the Hérault river, which flows from north to south. In the North, the terroir is sheltered by the Montagne Noire and in the South West, it is the extension of the Biterrois. The altitude varies between 0 and 300 m, and there are vines at all altitudes.
The Languedoc-Pézenas Protected Designation of Origin has strict production conditions. The grapes come from plots identified by the producers and approved by the INAO.
In the Hérault, fifteen municipalities can claim to make Languedoc-Pézenas wines. These are: Adissan, Aspiran, Caux, Fontès, Fouzilhon, Gabian, Lieuran-Cabrières, Montesquieu, Neffiès, Nizas, Paulhan, Péret, Pézenas, Roujan and Vailhan.
The wines must come from the grape varieties: syrah, grenache noir and mourvèdre (70% minimum) individually limited to 75%, cinsault and carignan.
